Some DVD players, older TVs, car head units and projectors read AVI and nothing else. This page turns an MP4 into the AVI those devices expect — MPEG-4 (Xvid) video with MP3 audio — rather than an H.264 stream in an AVI wrapper, which such devices refuse.

Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser on your own device. The file never leaves your computer or phone, which is also why the tool keeps working when the connection drops.
Why is the AVI bigger than the MP4?
Xvid is an older codec and needs more bits for the same picture. That is the price of compatibility with old hardware; use a lower resolution if the device has a small screen.
Will it play on my TV?
If the TV reads AVI, it almost certainly reads this kind — Xvid + MP3 is what those players were built for. Check the manual for a maximum resolution; many older devices stop at 720p.
