NEF is Nikon’s raw format, from the D70 to the Z 9. A card full of NEFs is invisible to most programs and to every form; this page develops them on your own device and gives you JPGs at the quality or size you choose.
Compressed and uncompressed NEFs, 12 and 14-bit, are decoded in full. The sensor data is demosaiced, white-balanced as the camera set it and colour-managed with a profile for the body — Nikon files do not carry their own colour matrix, so the reader brings one — then matched to the JPEG Nikon stores inside the file. The result looks like the picture on the camera’s screen.
Nothing is uploaded; a 24-megapixel file takes up to a minute to develop.
How to convert Nikon NEF to JPG

JPG is already selected. Set a maximum width or a size limit if the photo is going to a form.
Press Convert. The raw is developed on your device — this takes up to a minute per file.

Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. This conversion runs entirely inside your browser using your own device’s processing power. The file never leaves your computer or phone, which is why it also works when your connection drops.
Which Nikon cameras does it read?
DSLRs from the D70 and D70s through the D750, D850 and D6, and the Z mirrorless series. Files from a D70s (uncompressed), a D750 (compressed 12-bit) and a Z 6 were checked here. Nikon’s compact raw, NRW, is read too.
Does it handle Nikon’s lossless compressed NEF?
Yes. Nikon’s Huffman-coded compressed NEF, both 12 and 14-bit, is decoded; so is uncompressed NEF.
Will the colours match ViewNX or the camera?
They are fitted to the JPEG the camera embedded in the NEF, so they are close to the camera’s own rendering. Picture Control, Active D-Lighting and lens corrections are not reproduced.
Is the camera information (EXIF) kept?
No. The JPG is rebuilt from the pixels alone, so camera model, exposure, date and location are not carried over. For a photo you are about to upload to a form or share, that is usually what you want.
Is there a size limit?
A picture is reduced, keeping its proportions, when it is larger than the memory a browser tab can hold: above about 16 megapixels on a phone or tablet, above 60 megapixels on a computer. Anything below that keeps every pixel.
Why does the first file take a moment to open?
The reader for these files is a 3.5 MB engine that is downloaded from this site the first time one of them is opened in a visit, then kept for the rest of the visit. It runs in a background thread of your browser; the file itself is never sent anywhere.
