Scanners frequently produce pages out of order, particularly when scanning double-sided originals in two passes. This puts them right without re-scanning.

Pages are moved, not redrawn, so the document keeps its original quality and its text stays selectable.

Three ways to set the order

On a computer, drag a thumbnail: the other pages shift as you pass over them, so you see the new order before you let go. On a phone, use the two arrows under each thumbnail, which move that page one place earlier or later. The number between the arrows is the page's original number, so after several moves you can still tell where each page came from.

For bigger moves, type the order in the box above the thumbnails. 5, 1-4 puts page 5 first, a backwards span such as 10-1 reverses those pages, and pages you do not mention follow in their original order. Reverse order turns the whole document round in one press. The order you have made is written out under the box, and a page listed twice, or one the PDF does not have, is named instead.

Save stays unavailable until a page has moved, and Reset puts every page back where it started.

What stays attached to each page

The pages are taken out and put back in the new order inside the same document, not copied into a new one, so nothing that belongs to them is lost. Bookmarks still open the page they named, now at its new position. Links from one page to another still reach the right page. Form fields can still be filled in, highlights and notes stay on their pages, and the title and author stored in the file are kept. The result is named after the original with -reordered added.

Long documents

Above 250 pages the thumbnails are not drawn, to keep the browser responsive. The order box and Reverse order still work, so a long document is reordered by typing: 301-400, 1-300 moves the last hundred pages of a 400-page file to the front.

Reordering never turns a page. A page that is sideways or upside down is put right with /rotate-pdf.
