Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The compression runs entirely inside your browser using your own device’s processing power. The file never leaves your computer or phone, which is why it also works when your connection drops.
Why is the result a little under 100 KB?
The limit is a ceiling. The tool returns the highest-quality version that stays under your number, which normally lands just below it.
Does compressing a JPG twice ruin it?
Each re-encode loses a little, but one pass at a sensible quality is invisible at screen size. Start from the original photo rather than an already-compressed copy when you can.
My photo is a HEIC or PNG, not a JPG
