What the PNG contains

Your browser decodes the JPG into pixels, and oxipng writes those pixels into the PNG without changing any of them. The result card confirms this with the line “Lossless — every pixel is identical to the original”. There is no quality slider for PNG, because nothing is approximated.

A phone photo that the camera stored sideways, with a note telling viewers to turn it, comes out with the turn already applied to the pixels, so the PNG is upright in every program, including programs that ignored the note in the JPG. The camera model, date and location stored in the JPG are not copied.

Leave the size limit off on this page

The page also offers Force a maximum file size. For PNG, the only way that switch can make a file smaller is to reduce the number of colours, from 256 down to as few as 2, and then the pixel size. A photograph pushed through that path comes out covered in fine dot patterns and is no longer lossless.

If a size limit matters, keep the photo as JPG and shrink it with /compress-image, or convert it with /jpg-to-webp. Max width / height does work here: a scaled-down PNG is smaller, though the result is then no longer pixel-identical to the original, and the card shows a quality score instead of the lossless line.

Converting does not make a background transparent

PNG can store transparency, but converting does not create any. The white or coloured background of the JPG stays in the PNG as ordinary pixels. To cut a person out of the background and get a transparent PNG, use /remove-background.
