Sharp pages from screenshots and diagrams

Keeping a document of screenshots small

A Max file size only acts when the PDF built without loss is over it. It then turns every PNG into a JPG and shrinks them step by step until the file fits, as explained on /jpg-to-pdf. For screenshots of text, JPG compression softens the letters, so two other routes often keep them sharper.

First, cut each screenshot down to the part that matters with /crop-image: fewer pixels make a smaller file without touching the quality of what is left. Second, reduce the number of colours in each PNG with /compress-image, which keeps it a PNG, and then build the PDF here with No limit.

Tall screenshots and page size

A phone screenshot is much taller in proportion than an A4 or Letter page. On those page sizes it is scaled down until its whole height fits, which can leave a narrow strip of small text in the middle of the page.
