Each page of your PDF is rendered to a JPG image at the resolution you choose. A single-page PDF downloads as one image; a multi-page document comes back as a ZIP with one numbered image per page.

Higher resolution produces sharper images and larger files. For posting a page to social media or inserting it into a slide, the default is plenty; for printing or zooming into fine detail, raise the scale before converting.

Pages are drawn with pdf.js, a PDF engine served from this site, so text in every script, embedded fonts and vector diagrams come out as drawn — including Chinese, Japanese or Korean text whose fonts are not stored in the PDF.

Which resolution to choose

The Resolution menu has five settings: Screen (72 dots per inch), Good (108), High (144, the default), Print (216) and Maximum (288). At High, an A4 page becomes an image of about 1,190 by 1,684 pixels. Maximum doubles both sides compared with High, which means four times the pixels and a much larger file.

High is enough to read ordinary text on a phone, to post a page or to place it in a slide. Choose Print or Maximum when the image will be printed, or when someone needs to zoom into small print, a signature or a stamp. Screen suits thumbnails and quick previews. To keep phones from running out of memory, each image is held to at most 16 million pixels and 8,192 pixels on its longest side. A4 and Letter pages stay well inside that at every setting; only large-format pages, from A3 at Maximum or A2 at Print, come out slightly smaller than asked.

The JPG quality slider

The slider runs from 40 to 100 in steps of 5 and starts at 90. The higher the number, the cleaner text edges stay. Lower values give smaller files but leave faint blurred spots around letters and thin lines, which show most on pages of plain text. For such pages, /pdf-to-png avoids that blur entirely, at the cost of larger files. JPG has no transparency, so every page is drawn on white.

What you get back

A one-page PDF gives a single image, and its size in pixels is shown under the download button. Several pages come back in one zip named after the PDF, such as report-jpg-pages.zip, holding report-page-1.jpg, report-page-2.jpg and so on. In a document of ten pages or more the numbers get leading zeros (page-01), so the files sort in page order. Previews of the first 12 pages appear before you download.

One PDF is converted at a time, and every page of it. To keep only some pages, take them out first with /extract-pdf-pages. A PDF of more than 100 pages shows a warning, because every image is kept in memory until you download; on a phone, a lower resolution helps. Cancel stops the work between two pages. A PDF that only restricts editing or printing converts without asking, and one that needs a password to open asks for it.
