A Canadian visa, eTA, study or work permit, or a permanent-residence application filed online with IRCC asks for a photo of 420 × 540 pixels, 35 × 45 mm at 305 DPI, at least 60 KB, plain white background. These numbers were confirmed on an official page of IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) (read 24 September 2026; the link is under Sources). The head should fill about 69–80% of the photo’s height, with a neutral expression, eyes open and nothing covering the face. IRCC does not accept edited photos, so take the photo against a plain light wall in even light and use this page only to crop and size it.

Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Cropping, background cleaning and compression all run inside your browser on your own device. Your face never reaches a server, which is why the tool also works with the internet switched off.
Is the Canadian photo the same as the Schengen one?
Same frame, 35 × 45 mm, but IRCC states its own minimum pixels (420 × 540) and prefers a white background. This page uses the Canadian settings.
Is this the Canadian passport photo?
No. Passport Canada requires a 50 × 70 mm print taken by a commercial photographer, with the studio’s name and the date on the back, so it cannot be made at home. This page makes the 35 × 45 mm digital photo that IRCC’s online visa, eTA, study-permit and work-permit applications take.
Does the PR card or citizenship photo use the same specification?
Not exactly. IRCC’s PR card and citizenship photo specifications are 50 × 70 mm with the head 31–36 mm high, and paper applications want the photographer’s details on the back. Check the IRCC page for those two before using this file; for the online visa and permit applications, this page’s 420 × 540 photo is the one IRCC asks for.

Why do photos get rejected?
Most rejections are technical, not about the face: frame not 35 × 45 mm or below 420 × 540 pixels; head height outside the 31–36 mm range; background not plain white or light. This page fixes the size and framing automatically; the background has to be right in the photo itself.
Can I use a photo taken by a friend?
Yes. A phone photo taken from about a metre away, in daylight, against any plain wall, is the best starting point. Avoid a selfie held too close, which distorts the face.
Can I print it as well as upload it?
Yes. The JPEG carries a 305 DPI stamp so it prints at 35 × 45 mm. The tool makes one photo, not a sheet of copies; a photo shop can print as many as you need from it.
What if my form asks for a different number?
