Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Cropping, background cleaning and compression all run inside your browser on your own device. Your face never reaches a server, which is why the tool also works with the internet switched off.
Is this also the US passport photo?
Not for an online passport renewal. The DS-160 visa and the DV lottery take a 600 × 600 pixel JPEG under 240 KB, which is what this page makes. The State Department's online passport renewal accepts a photo between 54 KB and 10 MB and requires an original, unedited picture — it tells applicants to fix the real background and retake the photo rather than change it with software, so do not use the background cleaner for a passport renewal. The 600 × 600 pixel and 240 KB rules were last checked on 24 September 2026 against the State Department's own DV-2026 instructions, published in the Federal Register (govinfo.gov); travel.state.gov could not be read that day, so the portal's own page remains the authority.
Can I use the same photo for the DV lottery and the DS-160?
Both use the same 600 × 600 JPEG rules, but the lottery requires a photo taken within the last six months, and the visa interview will expect a recent one too. Make a fresh one for each.
Does the background have to be pure white?
White or off-white, plain, with no shadows or patterns. Take the photo against a real white or off-white wall: the State Department warns that a manipulated photo may make you ineligible for the DV lottery, and it refuses edited photos for visas and passport renewals too, so do not replace the background with software. Use this page only to crop and size the photo.

Why do photos get rejected?

Can I use a photo taken by a friend?

Can I print it as well as upload it?
