The aspect ratio is always kept — the other side is worked out automatically — so nothing is stretched or squashed. For a portrait video the preset applies to the short side, so 720p means 720 pixels wide.
By default a video is never made larger than it already is. Upscaling only adds blur and megabytes, so a 480p source asked for 1080p is left at 480p and the tool says so. If a platform insists on a minimum size, switch on "Allow upscaling".
The picture is re-encoded to H.264 at a quality that is visually transparent, the audio is copied when MP4 can carry it, and the result is an MP4 that plays everywhere. Everything runs on your device; files over 1 GB are handled in parts that fit in memory. To hit a file size in MB rather than a resolution, use the Compress tool instead.

Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. This conversion runs entirely inside your browser using your own device’s processing power. The file never leaves your computer or phone, which is why it also works when your connection drops.
Why did my video not get bigger?
Because upscaling is off by default: enlarging a video invents pixels that were never recorded, so it looks softer and the file grows for nothing. Turn on "Allow upscaling" if you need the larger frame anyway.
Will a smaller resolution make the file smaller?
Usually a lot smaller — fewer pixels need fewer bits. But size also depends on length and motion; if you need to land under a specific number of megabytes, the Compress tool targets a size directly.
How does the custom width work?
Type the width you want in pixels; the height follows from the aspect ratio and is rounded to an even number, which H.264 requires.
