Convert EXR to PNG

Runs on your device · Your file never leaves your device.

Renderers and compositors save their output as OpenEXR: floating-point pixels in linear light, far more than a screen can show and more than any viewer, slide or client email can open. This page converts EXR files to PNG on your own device.

The linear values are converted to display colour (sRGB) — the same conversion a colour-managed viewer does — and the alpha channel is kept, so a render with a transparent background stays transparent. Half-float and full-float files, scan-line and tiled, with PIZ, ZIP, RLE and the other standard compressions, are read.

Nothing is uploaded: the reader runs in a background thread of your browser.

How to convert EXR to PNG

  1. Add one EXR file or a batch of frames.
  2. PNG is already selected; set a maximum width if the frames should also be smaller.
  3. Press Convert. Each frame is converted from linear light to display colour on your device.
  4. Download one PNG, or a ZIP for a batch.

Not for: Keeping the full dynamic range — PNG is 8-bit display values. Keep the EXR for compositing and grading; convert for viewing and sharing.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. This conversion runs entirely inside your browser using your own device’s processing power. The file never leaves your computer or phone, which is why it also works when your connection drops.
What happens to values brighter than white?
An EXR can store light above 1.0; PNG cannot. Values above white are clipped, as they would be on a screen without tone mapping. Highlights that matter are best brought under 1.0 in the compositor first.
Does it read multi-part or multi-layer EXR?
One part is converted — the default RGBA image. A multi-part file with separate passes (depth, normals, cryptomatte) gives the beauty pass, and the result card says that only one of the parts was used.
Is the alpha channel kept?
Yes. A render with transparency becomes a PNG with transparency; the colours of edge pixels are stored unpremultiplied, as PNG expects.
Why does the first file take a moment to open?
The reader for these files is a 3.5 MB engine that is downloaded from this site the first time one of them is opened in a visit, then kept for the rest of the visit. It runs in a background thread of your browser; the file itself is never sent anywhere.
