Drop a .docx file and download it as a PDF. The document is laid out in your browser on A4 pages with one-inch margins, cut between lines rather than through them, and each page is written into the PDF as a picture.
Headings, bold, italic, underline, highlighting, lists, tables, pictures, alignment, indents and page breaks carry over, and so do the typeface and size set on the text when that typeface is installed on your device. Every paragraph takes its direction from its own words, so Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Urdu read right to left beside English. Text colour, headers, footers and page numbers do not carry over, and because each page is a picture, the words cannot be selected or searched.
Nothing is uploaded. The conversion uses your own device, so confidential contracts and medical or legal documents never travel across a network.

Paragraphs in Word's Heading, Title and Subtitle styles become headings in larger bold type. Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, superscript, subscript and highlighting are kept, and so are lists, tables, pictures placed in the text, centred, right-aligned and justified paragraphs, indents, blank lines and page breaks. Footnotes and endnotes are gathered into a numbered list at the very end.
A typeface and size set on the text itself are kept, the typeface only when it is installed on the device doing the conversion; otherwise Arial is used. Text that simply follows the document's default style is set in Arial at 12 points. Text colour, headers, footers and page numbers do not carry over, and neither do Word charts, SmartArt or drawn shapes. Every table gets a thin grey line around each cell.
Each paragraph, list item and table cell takes its direction from the first letter in it. A paragraph that starts in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian or Urdu reads right to left and sits against the right margin, an English one left to right, in any mix within one document, and the result is the same whichever language this page is shown in. A paragraph that opens with an English word but continues in Arabic is laid out left to right, because the first letter decides.
The document is laid out on an A4 page with one-inch margins on every side, the margins of a new Word document, and divided into pages between lines, never through one. Only a picture taller than a whole page has to be cut. A page break in Word starts a new page. Because the layout is redone, the PDF can have a different number of pages from the original.
Each page is stored as a picture at about 192 dots per inch. A page with only black, white and grey is stored in 16 shades of grey with no JPEG blur, which takes about a third of the space of a JPEG; a page with colour, such as a photo or highlighting, is stored as a JPEG. The words cannot be selected, searched or read aloud, and links are not clickable. If the file is too large to send, /compress-pdf brings it under a size you choose.
Only the .docx format is read. An older .doc file is named in a message and left out. Several documents can be added at once, or a zip of them, and each comes back as its own PDF with the same name. The same box takes Markdown, plain text and saved web pages (.html), laid out the same way, and a PDF added here becomes a Word file, as on /pdf-to-word.
